Brussels – the European commission unveiled a thorough strategy Wednesday aimed at bolstering the EU’s access to rare earth minerals,critical components for a wide range of industries from electronics to renewable energy. The plan, spearheaded by EU Industry Commissioner stéphane Séjourné, seeks to diminish the bloc’s dependence on China, which currently dominates both the mining and processing of these vital resources. Séjourné recently accused Beijing of “blackmail” regarding rare earth supplies, underscoring the urgency of the Commission’s response.
This initiative arrives at a pivotal moment as geopolitical tensions rise and supply chain vulnerabilities are exposed.The EU’s reliance on a single source for rare earths poses a significant risk to its economic security and its ambitious green transition goals. The plan focuses on coordinated procurement, increased domestic production and processing capacity, and strategic partnerships wiht resource-rich nations, with a recent agreement already secured with Indonesia. The Commission’s strategy centers on a two-pronged approach: collective purchasing power and internal capacity building.
