Former Honduras President Juan Orlando Hernández Released After Trump Pardon

NEW YORK – Former Honduras President ⁤Juan Orlando Hernández‌ was⁤ released from a U.S. federal prison on Tuesday ⁤following ⁣a last-minute pardon‍ granted by former President Donald Trump. Hernández had been serving a 45-year sentence‌ after being convicted in ⁣March 2023 of drug trafficking and weapons charges.

Hernández was found guilty of accepting bribes from drug ⁣traffickers to facilitate ‌the ⁢movement of approximately 400 tons ⁢of cocaine through⁤ Honduras to the United States.⁢ Throughout the trial,‍ he maintained his innocence, claiming he was targeted by drug cartels he had worked to extradite to the U.S.

During ‍sentencing, U.S. District Judge P. Kevin‍ Castel stated the ⁢punishment was‍ intended to deter others in positions of power⁤ from believing⁣ their status protects ⁣them from legal consequences. The judge asserted evidence demonstrated Hernández ⁢actively protected the drug trade⁤ while ⁣publicly portraying himself as an⁣ anti-drug crusader.

The pardon, ⁣announced days before Honduras’ recent presidential election, has sparked controversy. Honduras Attorney General Johel Zelaya stated via X ‌(formerly ‍Twitter) that ‍his office remains⁣ committed to pursuing justice and ending ⁣impunity, though ‍he⁤ did not specify potential charges⁢ Hernández might face upon return to Honduras. Several corruption investigations were launched during HernándezS two terms in⁣ office but did‍ not result in charges‍ against him. Current President Xiomara Castro, who initially arrested and extradited Hernández to the U.S., ‍will remain in office until January.

Some observers believe the pardon announcement ⁤bolstered the campaign ‌of Nasry Asfura, the national Party candidate, during the recent Honduran election.
