Will Stein Appointed Head Football Coach at University of Kentucky
LEXINGTON, KY – December 4, 2023 – the University of Kentucky has named will Stein as its 38th head football coach, UK Athletics announced today. Stein,the offensive coordinator for Oregon,arrives as the successor to Mark Stoops,who departed after 12 seasons leading the Wildcats.
The hiring marks a meaningful shift for the Kentucky programme, signaling an intent to prioritize offensive firepower under SteinS leadership. The decision comes after a period of evaluation following stoops’ resignation on November 26, 2023, and positions the Wildcats to compete in the evolving Southeastern Conference landscape. The move impacts current players, recruits, the fan base, and the broader athletic department as Kentucky navigates a new era of football.
Stein, 32, brings a rapidly ascending coaching profile to Lexington. He orchestrated a prolific Oregon offense in 2023,averaging 38.8 points per game – 12th nationally - and 431.8 total yards per game. Under his guidance, the Ducks’ offense ranked eighth in the country in passing efficiency.
Prior to Oregon, Stein spent three seasons at UTSA, serving as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. during his tenure, UTSA experienced unprecedented success, culminating in a Conference USA championship in 2021 and a 13-3 record in 2022. He was recognized as the 2022 footballscoop Coordinator of the Year.

Stein’s coaching career began with roles at louisiana Lafayette (2014-2016), Oklahoma state (2017), and Arkansas (2018-2019) before his arrival at UTSA. He holds a bachelor’s degree from louisiana Lafayette (2014).
Details regarding Stein’s contract will be released at a later date. A formal introductory press conference is planned for next week.
