IHECS Launches CEAM: A New international Project to Advance Media Education in Vietnam
IHECS is proud to announce the launch of “CEAM – Cooperation for Media Education in Vietnam,” a new international project designed to integrate and develop media education within Vietnamese universities, notably at the University of Hanoi. Selected from a highly competitive pool of applicants by ARES, CEAM represents a notable step forward in IHECS’s commitment to global media literacy.
The project is spearheaded by Emmanuel Wathelet, President of the Master in Media Education (EAM), in close collaboration with Yen-Nhi Nguyen, Deputy Director of the French department and Head of the “business Dialog” section at the University of Hanoi (HANU). This partnership blossomed from Yen-nhi’s ARES mobility program stay at IHECS from September to December 2022, where she explored innovative teaching practices within the EAM program and identified a need for dedicated media education courses at HANU.
While Vietnam demonstrates a political commitment to digital education, CEAM aims to broaden the scope beyond purely technical skills.Leveraging the expertise of IHECS’s EAM program, the project will emphasize the crucial connection between technology, societal impact, critical thinking, and the role of media in a democratic society.
CEAM will achieve its goals through a series of key initiatives:
* International Seminar (April, Hanoi): A collaborative event bringing together researchers, educators, policymakers, media professionals, and representatives from civil society to share perspectives on media education in Europe and Vietnam. The seminar will feature research presentations, panel discussions, and demonstrations of educational tools.
* Publication of a Collaborative Book: A compilation of key insights from the seminar, with contributions from experts including Baptiste Buidin (Protagoras) as part of the steering committee.
* Co-Authored Research articles: Joint publications by Emmanuel wathelet and Yen-Nhi Nguyen documenting the challenges, successes, and dynamics of implementing media education in Vietnam.
* co-Taught course: A new jointly-delivered course focusing on “openness to critical thinking,” offered by IHECS and the University of Hanoi.
* Internship Opportunities: Two Master 2 students from the EAM program will gain valuable practical experience through internships with partner organizations in Hanoi, directly contributing to the development of media education initiatives.
This project is a truly collaborative effort, mobilizing resources from across IHECS – including the EAM section, the international department, and the techno-pedagogical unit (La Capt). CEAM not only offers significant educational benefits but also strengthens the EAM Master’s position and expands IHECS’s international influence in the vital field of media education.
