Ministry Urges Continued Classes Amidst Looming Teacher Strike
Porto-Novo, Benin – The Ministry of Pre-university Education and Literacy (MEPU-A) is urging all school administrations to maintain educational continuity as teachers’ unions prepare to begin a strike on Monday, December 1. The ministry released a statement today calling for “all necessary measures” to prevent further disruption to Benin’s education system, which has already faced meaningful challenges in recent years.
The MEPU-A’s statement directly addresses the unions’ call to cease all activity, emphasizing the need to continue courses “in calm, discipline and serenity.” The ministry is relying on the commitment of teachers, support from parents, and collaboration with administrative and local authorities to ensure schools remain open and functioning despite the planned industrial action.
“The ministry invites all school administrations to take all necessary measures to ensure educational continuity within their respective establishments,” the press release states. The MEPU-A also reaffirmed its willingness to engage in “responsible dialogue” to find lasting solutions for the national education system.
However, the strike call is not universally supported within the Interunion of Education. The SLECG,led by Aboubacar Soumah, has publicly rejected the strike slogan.
The MEPU-A’s response signals a firm stance against further disruption to the academic year and a commitment to preserving access to education for Benin’s students. The situation remains fluid as the December 1 strike date approaches.
