Nicaraguan Leaders Pledge Unwavering Support for Maduro Amidst Trump Tensions
Managua, Nicaragua – November 25, 2023 – Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario murillo have publicly reaffirmed their staunch support for Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro as tensions escalate with the United States. The declaration, made Saturday, comes amidst a U.S. military deployment in the Caribbean sea and warnings from Washington regarding Venezuelan airspace.
Ortega and murillo expressed “full and permanent solidarity” with the Venezuelan people, specifically naming Maduro, Delcy Rodríguez, and Diosdado Cabello. “There we are, always together and always beyond,” they stated, signaling a continued alliance.
The U.S. has maintained a naval and air presence in the Caribbean near Venezuela as September, citing a mission to combat drug trafficking. However, Caracas views the deployment as a direct “threat.” the U.S.has also directly linked Maduro to the Cartel of the Suns, a group allegedly involved in drug trafficking.
Ortega previously dismissed the U.S. military activity as a “theatre” and ”clownsy” attempt to “scare” Latin American governments, notably Venezuela.
Adding to the pressure, U.S. president Donald Trump warned via his social media platform,Truth Social, that Venezuelan airspace ”will remain completely closed” and shoudl be considered as such by airlines and pilots. On November 21, the Federal Aviation Governance issued a warning urging “extreme caution” when flying over Venezuela and the southern Caribbean, citing a “potentially dangerous situation.”
The nicaraguan leaders’ public show of support underscores the long-standing relationship between Managua and Caracas, dating back to the era of Hugo Chávez. This latest statement positions Ortega and Murillo firmly alongside Maduro in the face of increasing pressure from the Trump administration.
