Travis Turner, the head football coach and physical education teacher at Union High School in Wise County, Virginia, is now a fugitive wanted on charges related to child sexual abuse material, authorities say.Turner reportedly walked into the woods with a firearm as virginia State Police were actively searching for him, according to a statement released by his attorney.
The disappearance of Turner, who led his team to an undefeated 12-0 season culminating in a regional final appearance, has gripped the community. While the football team continued its prosperous run, police transitioned their search from a missing person investigation to a fugitive apprehension, citing the serious nature of the allegations.The case raises concerns about the safety of children and the potential impact on the Union High School community.
Virginia State police initiated a complete search utilizing search and rescue teams,drones,and canine units after Turner went missing. The investigation led to charges related to possession of child sexual abuse material.
“As his disappearance, VSP has utilized a number of assets…to assist in the search,” police stated. “VSP’s main priority is locating Turner safely; he is now considered a fugitive.”
turner’s family has been actively involved in the search, coordinating efforts with friends in the surrounding wooded areas, though hampered by inclement weather and deference to the official police operation.”These efforts have been limited by weather conditions and with respect for the official operations underway,” a statement from the family’s attorney said. “It is indeed the family’s prayer that Travis is safe and will have the chance to defend himself in a court of law.”
