Texas Tech Receivers Fuel Dominant Win over West Virginia
Morgantown, W.Va. – A stellar performance by Texas tech’s receiving corps propelled the Red Raiders to a decisive victory over West Virginia, 38-17, on Friday night at Milan Puskar Stadium. The Red Raiders’ passing attack proved unstoppable, with multiple receivers contributing to a dominant offensive showing.
The win highlighted the emergence of several key players in the Tech offense.Wide receiver Xavier Watts led the charge with a career-high 127 receiving yards and a touchdown, including impressive grabs of 43 and 50 yards. Tight end Terrance Carter Jr. was equally impactful, hauling in all 10 of his catches in the first half, setting up touchdowns and consistently converting crucial third downs.
Texas Tech quarterback Behren Morton orchestrated the offense efficiently, completing 25 of 32 passes for 310 yards and 3 touchdowns while playing only the first series of the second half. Morton, who has been managing a right lower-leg injury since the season opener, expressed relief at his performance, stating, “I felt good today.”
Watts’ performance included a juggling grab over a defender. His 50-yard reception in the third quarter moved the Red Raiders into the red zone, leading to a 9-yard touchdown run by J’Koby Williams two plays later. Carter’s 27-yard catch set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Jacob Rodriguez.
Late in the game, true freshman Lloyd Jones III entered the contest and threw his first two career touchdown passes – 15 and 30 yards – to Micah Hudson, who also recorded his first career touchdown catches.
“we’ve been good on third down,” said Texas tech head coach Joey McGuire. “That’s a big deal for us.”
