Green Party Leader Criticizes Opposition leader, Advocates for Inclusive Climate Policy
Hanover, Germany – Green Party leader Felix Banaszak sharply criticized opposition leader Friedrich Merz (CDU) on Saturday, labeling him a “Chancellor with an overflowing mouth and empty hands” during the party’s federal conference in Hanover. Banaszak simultaneously called for climate protection measures to be made more socially equitable and emotionally resonant with the public.
Banaszak argued that declining public engagement with climate issues stems from concurrent crises like war, pandemics, and inflation, compounded by lobbying efforts from fossil fuel interests. “Today we are declaring war on this fossil lobbyism,” he declared before approximately 800 delegates.
He emphasized the need for a “participatory ecology” and a “climate policy for everyone,” cautioning against shaming individuals for lifestyle choices like occasional air travel or car ownership. Instead, he advocated for fostering hope for a positive future.
The Greens are prioritizing the swift implementation of “climate money,” designed to disproportionately benefit lower-income households, alongside socially tiered ecological support for initiatives like heat pumps and supplementary aid for those with limited financial resources. The party also intends to address the challenges faced by renters in major cities.
Banaszak contrasted the Green Party’s forward-looking approach with Merz’s perceived focus on preserving the status quo, stating, “If you look for the future in the past, you won’t find it there.”
The party reaffirmed its commitment to securing majorities for enterprising ecological policies and striving for a “better, fairer world.” Climate activist Ineza Grace of Rwanda addressed the conference, urging increased climate protection efforts and greater funding for global climate financing.
