Raguhn/MZ – ​Online fraudsters are exploiting vulnerable⁢ pet lovers, and a recent case ⁢in⁢ teh anhalt-Bitterfeld ‍district serves ‌as a stark ⁣warning. A 73-year-old woman was scammed out of a substantial ⁢deposit‍ while attempting to​ find a new dog after the death of her beloved pet. ⁢

The incident, reported to police on Thursday, highlights a growing trend of online deception targeting individuals⁤ seeking companionship. With pet scams on⁢ the ⁤rise, authorities emphasize the importance of caution when purchasing animals ⁤online, particularly when encountering requests for advance payments.The victim, a resident of the Raguhn-Jeßnitz area, responded to an online⁣ advertisement on November 14th that appeared legitimate. Enticed by ⁣the prospect of a new four-legged friend, she‍ sent a deposit of approximately 450 euros without meeting the animal or verifying the sellerS credentials.

The fraudsters subsequently demanded‌ an additional ⁤350 euros to cover purportedly increased transportation costs,⁤ raising the woman’s suspicions. Recognizing‍ the ⁣escalating requests as a⁣ potential scam, she promptly contacted the police.

Investigators urge prospective pet buyers ‍to avoid sending money upfront ⁢and ⁤to refrain from impulsive transactions. They strongly recommend a formal purchase ⁤agreement and thorough documentation before finalizing⁣ any animal acquisition. Personal inspection of‌ the animal is also crucial ⁣to verify its health and the‍ seller’s legitimacy.
