‘Stranger Things’ Creator Urges Fans to Disable TV Settings for Optimal Viewing Experience
Los Gatos, CA - Ross Duffer, co-creator of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things, is urging fans to adjust their television settings before watching the upcoming fifth season, citing concerns that certain features diminish the show’s intended visual quality. Duffer recently shared his recommendations in a video posted to his Instagram account.
According to duffer, many televisions come equipped with “enhancements” that negatively impact color accuracy and overall image fidelity. He specifically called out a feature known as TruMotion - also referred to as smooth motion or the “soap opera effect” – which artificially smooths motion by interpolating frames.
“whatever you do, don’t turn on anything called ‘vivid,’ because that will turn on all the worst settings. And that will destroy the colors,” Duffer warned in the video, referencing settings commonly found on LG televisions, which he uses.
Duffer recommends disabling features like dynamic contrast, super resolution, edge enhancer, color filter, and noise reduction, or their equivalents, on other television brands. He explained that these settings often create an unintended viewing experience, diverging from the filmmakers’ artistic vision.
While many casual viewers may not be aware of these settings, Duffer hopes the show’s popularity will encourage fans to prioritize image quality and seek guidance on optimal TV configurations for their specific models, frequently enough available on online forums.
