National Guard Soldier Dies From Injuries After D.C. Shooting
One National Guard soldier has died from injuries sustained in a shooting near the White House on Wednesday, officials confirmed. A second service member remains in critical condition. The incident, described by D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser as a “targeted attack,” occured just blocks from the presidential residence.
The two National Guard members were ambushed by a lone gunman who “came around the corner” and opened fire, according to Metropolitan Police Department official Jeffery Carroll. Other National Guard members intervened, ending the attack and taking the suspect into custody. The soldiers were part of an anti-crime federal task force-comprising troops and federal law enforcement-deployed to the capital city during the Trump administration.
The shooting prompted a strong response from Judge Jeanine Pirro, who, at a thursday press conference, dismissed criticism of the National Guard’s deployment. “I don’t even wanna talk about whether thay should have been there,” Pirro stated. “We ought to kiss the ground and thank god that the president said, its time to bring in more law enforcement to make sure that a city that had the 4th highest homicide rate in the country, that that violence was quelled.”
According to a February report from the Rochester Institute of Technology,D.C.’s homicide rate in 2024 was 27.3 per 100,000 people, a significant decrease from 2023.
