Florida Lawyer Phillip Ortiz Accused of Attacking a Man in Wild Norwegian Cruise Ship Brawl
MIAMI-DADE COUNTY,FL – A 38-year-old Florida attorney is facing charges of aggravated battery after allegedly attacking a 67-year-old man aboard a Norwegian Cruise ship, leaving the victim unconscious. Phillip Ortiz, of Miami Lakes, was arrested following the incident, according to a criminal complaint filed in Miami-Dade County.
The altercation occurred when Ortiz was reportedly told he could not access a restricted corridor on the ship. Witnesses and police reports indicate a verbal dispute escalated into a physical confrontation, ultimately resulting in the victim sustaining serious injuries. The incident highlights the potential for escalating conflicts in enclosed environments and raises questions about security protocols on cruise lines.
According to the criminal complaint, Ortiz confronted the man, allegedly stating, “Who the f— are you to tell me what I can and can’t do?” The victim told police Ortiz then pushed him, and a woman believed to be Ortiz’s wife also joined in pushing the man. After retreating, Ortiz allegedly forced open a door and charged at the victim.
The report details that Ortiz tripped the man, causing him to fall and hit his head, with Ortiz’s full body weight landing on top of him, resulting in a loss of consciousness. Passengers immediately began performing CPR on the victim while Ortiz allegedly did not offer assistance.
Ortiz’s attorney, Stephan Lopez, stated, “My client vehemently denies that he is the primary aggressor,” according to WSVN.
Norwegian Cruise Line released a statement to USA Today, saying, “We have zero tolerance for violence of any kind on our ships and are committed to providing a safe cruising experience for all aboard.”
The examination is ongoing. Ortiz is charged with aggravated battery on a person 65 or older. It remains unclear weather the victim was a passenger or a member of the ship’s crew.
