AI to Independently Develop Video Games Within Three Years, elon Musk Predicts
PALO ALTO, CA – November 12, 2025 – Elon Musk stated on the Rushmore on X podcast that artificial intelligence will reach the capability of independently creating complete video games within three years. The technology, he explained, will move beyond being a support tool and assume full responsibility for game design, programming, and production.
While forecasting this leap in AI capability, Musk tempered expectations, predicting the first fully AI-generated video game won’t likely appear until 2029, citing the inherent complexity of interactive entertainment. “The technology will no longer be a support tool and will assume the design, programming and production of a title from start to finish,” Musk said.
The discussion also included Bobby Kotick, former CEO of Activision Blizzard, who lauded Musk as “the best candidate to run a video game company.”
Musk revealed his personal “Mount Rushmore” of influential video games, naming Quake, Half-Life 2, BioShock, and Deus Ex. Notably absent from his list were more recent titles like Diablo IV, despite previous praise from Musk.
Musk’s prediction arrives as the gaming industry increasingly experiments with AI for specific tasks, such as generating dialogue and synthetic voices. Though, complete, autonomous game creation by AI remains uncommon. Musk envisions a future where AI fundamentally alters game growth, potentially redefining – and even replacing – the role of human developers.
