Jimmy cliff, the grammy-winning Jamaican reggae singer, actor, and cultural icon who ‍brought the music of his homeland to ​a global audience, has died aged 81. His agent ⁤confirmed the news, marking the end of an era for a performer whose career spanned ​over six decades and helped define the sound of reggae.

Cliff rose ⁣to international prominence with his starring role in the 1972 film ⁣ The harder They Come, a landmark achievement that⁣ introduced reggae ⁣to a wider audience, particularly in the United States where it was released in 1975.The film’s ‍soundtrack, featuring Cliff’s performances of the title track and “You Can Get It If You Really Want,” alongside tracks by Desmond Dekker, Toots & the Maytals, and others, ⁢became a defining album of the genre.

Born ⁢James Chambers in rural Jamaica, Cliff began performing as​ a child and quickly gained recognition for his talent. He ⁤moved to Kingston ​in the ⁤late 1960s, navigating a “gangster-infested” environment he later recalled, stating, “the only thing that stopped me from joining those gangs full-time was I⁤ didn’t know where I would‌ bury my head if⁤ my family heard that I was in Kingston firing a gun.” He achieved early success with hits like “Fantastic World, Gorgeous People” ​and “Many Rivers to Cross.”

Throughout the 1970s, ⁢Cliff continued to tour and release albums, including Give Thankx (1978), which was partly⁤ inspired by his travels to Africa and⁤ his conversion to Islam. He also secured high-profile appearances, such as a performance on Saturday Night⁤ Live. Bruce Springsteen championed his song “Trapped,” playing it on tour in the early ‌1980s, and a live version appeared on the charity album⁢ We Are the World.

Cliff experienced‍ a resurgence in popularity in ‌1994 with his rendition ⁤of “I⁤ Can See Clearly Now,” featured on the soundtrack ⁣to the film Cool Runnings. The song topped the French charts,returned him to the ⁢UK Top 40 for ‌the first time since 1970,and became a global hit.

Over the years, Cliff collaborated with a diverse range of artists, from the Rolling Stones to Sting, and more recently with Rancid’s Tim Armstrong, resulting in a Grammy-winning album in 2012. His ⁤discography encompasses over 30 studio ⁢albums, including his most recent release, Refugees (2022), a collaboration with Wyclef Jean.

While primarily‍ known for his music, Cliff also occasionally pursued acting, notably appearing ⁣in club Paradise (1986) alongside Robin Williams and Rick Moranis.He received seven Grammy nominations throughout his career,winning twice.
