DSA Faces Internal Division, Withholds Endorsement for NYC Council Member ossé’s Congressional Run
NEW YORK, NY – November 22, 2025 – Teh New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (NYC-DSA) is grappling with internal disagreement over its endorsement strategy for the upcoming congressional elections, ultimately deciding against backing City Council Member Chi Ossé’s bid against incumbent Representative Hakeem Jeffries. The decision highlights a strategic debate within the organization regarding resource allocation and prioritizing candidates with viable paths to victory.
The debate centers on Ossé’s recent entry into the DSA and questions about his long-term commitment to socialist principles, coupled with the perceived difficulty of unseating Jeffries. Without the full support of the DSA,sources say,Ossé faces notable hurdles in building a competitive campaign. This decision comes as the organization navigates a series of high-profile primary challenges and open-seat races in the city.
NYC-DSA has already endorsed City Council Member Alexa Avilés‘ planned primary challenge against Rep. Dan Goldman in the 10th Congressional District, despite reported plans from mayor-elect Mamdani to support City comptroller Brad Lander’s bid against goldman. The organization is also preparing to endorse a candidate to succeed retiring Rep.Nydia Velázquez in the 7th Congressional District, where State Sen. Julia Salazar is considered the front-runner.
Ossé, a strong supporter of Mamdani, was instrumental in developing the accomplished social media video strategy utilized during the mayor-elect’s campaign. He onyl recently joined the DSA in October 2025. The organization’s endorsement decisions reflect a broader internal discussion about how to best leverage its resources and influence in the upcoming midterm elections.
