International Leaders Call for further Discussion of US Ukraine Plan,Citing Security Concerns
A coalition of eleven nations and the European Union have jointly called for further deliberation regarding a 28-point plan for Ukraine proposed by the United States. The declaration underscores concerns that limitations placed on the Ukrainian armed forces coudl leave the country vulnerable to renewed aggression.
Leaders signing the declaration stated the US proposal ”is a base that will require additional work.” A key point of contention centers around potential restrictions on Ukraine’s military capabilities, with signatories expressing fears that without sufficient deterrents, Russia could return.
french President Emmanuel Macron reportedly affirmed the sentiment that “without deterrent elements, the Russians will return,” on the eve of upcoming negotiations. This highlights the urgency and seriousness with which the international community views the need for a robust security framework for Ukraine.
The joint declaration was signed by prominent figures including Ursula von der Leyen and antonio Costa representing the European Union, French President Emmanuel Macron, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Japanese representative Sanae Takaichi, Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro sanchez, British representative Keir Starmer, and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store.
