Ukraine Faces Potential Loss of Dignity or U.S.Support,Zelensky Warns
KYIV,Ukraine - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky cautioned that Ukraine risks losing either its dignity or crucial U.S. support if it concedes territory to Russia, as discussions regarding a potential peace settlement intensify. Zelensky’s remarks came in response to a U.S. draft resolution at the United Nations calling for a withdrawal of Russian troops from all Ukrainian territory, including areas Russia currently occupies and claims to have annexed.
The warning underscores the increasingly fraught position Ukraine finds itself in as the conflict nears its second anniversary. While Kyiv seeks to liberate all its territory, dwindling ammunition supplies and stalled counteroffensive operations have prompted international discussions about potential compromises. Zelensky’s statement highlights the difficult choices Ukraine faces: ceding land for the sake of ending the war,or continuing to fight with the risk of losing vital western assistance.
According to reports, Zelensky emphasized the importance of defending “every inch” of Ukrainian soil, while Berlin stressed that the current front line, not the one envisioned in the U.S. draft, should be the basis for any future negotiations.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov responded by telling reporters that Zelensky should “negotiate now” or risk losing more territory, adding that his “freedom to make decisions is shrinking in proportion to the territory lost” to Russian forces.
