Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany – A Lindach resident was defrauded of jewelry and cash this week by a perpetrator posing as a medical professional, police report. Authorities are seeking public assistance to identify those involved in the elaborate telephone scam.
On Wednesday, november 19th, a senior citizen received a call around midday from a man claiming to be Dr.Werner Schöneberg from the Staufer Clinic in Mutlangen. The caller falsely stated the woman’s daughter had been involved in a fatal traffic accident and demanded a substantial deposit to resolve the situation.
Over several hours, the victim was subjected to manipulative tactics and pressure. Between approximately 6:50 p.m. and 7:40 p.m., she handed over jewelry and cash to two unknown men.
Police describe the suspects as middle-aged men with dark hair. The Waiblingen criminal police are requesting anyone who observed suspicious activity in the Lindach area on Wednesday afternoon to contact them at (07361) 5800.
This incident underscores a growing trend of telephone fraud targeting vulnerable populations. Scammers frequently impersonate authority figures – such as doctors, lawyers, or police officers – to instill fear and coerce victims into relinquishing funds or valuables. Individuals should be wary of unsolicited calls demanding immediate payment or personal information, and are encouraged to verify claims independently through official channels.
