Russian Attacks⁤ Injure Dozens in‍ Kharkiv⁢ as Ukraine Seeks Further ‍Air Defense Support

Amidst escalating attacks, at least 32 people were⁣ injured in Kharkiv‍ overnight, marking the third consecutive night of intense Russian bombardment of the region. The attacks, targeting civilian infrastructure, ‍come as Ukraine continues to plead for increased air defense capabilities to protect its cities, particularly as winter approaches.

Ukrainian ⁤President Volodymyr ‌Zelensky recently highlighted the critical need for ⁢additional Patriot anti-aircraft systems. Following a visit to the United States in October were he met with defense industry representatives, including Raytheon – the manufacturer of ⁢the Patriot system – Zelensky stated his country “need[s]” 25 more Patriot systems‌ to effectively counter Russian strikes.

The United States responded Tuesday by approving a $105 million ⁢sale to Ukraine for maintenance of⁢ its existing Patriot batteries. The deal, which includes spare parts, services, and⁢ “upgrading launchers…as well as other services, accessories and spare parts,” according to⁣ a state‌ Department press release, requires Congressional notification.

However, the future of further direct U.S. aid remains uncertain. Since ‌Russia’s invasion in February 2022, the U.S. has provided $67 billion in military and financial assistance to Ukraine. President Donald Trump, who has positioned‌ himself as a potential mediator in the conflict, has been publicly critical of this level ⁣of support as ‌returning to office in January. He has rather championed a NATO‌ program allowing ⁢European nations to fund⁤ the transfer of American weaponry to ⁤Ukraine.

President Zelensky is scheduled to ‍travel to Türkiye on Wednesday in an effort to “re-engage” the United States in peace negotiations with Russia, which⁣ remain stalled. This diplomatic push coincides with ⁣renewed Russian shelling of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, raising concerns about the country’s preparedness for the coming winter.
