Romania evacuates Village Near Ukraine Border Following Russian Drone Strike
PLAURU, Romania - Romanian authorities have ordered the evacuation of approximately 100 to 150 residents from the village of Plauru, located on the Danube River opposite the Ukrainian port of Izmajil, after a Russian drone strike ignited a fire on a liquefied gas tanker. The Romanian Emergency Situations Agency issued a statement urging residents to avoid the area and evacuate, adhering to all official recommendations, including traffic restrictions and detours, due to a ”serious risk of explosion.”
The incident occurred following a large-scale Russian drone attack on the Odesa region overnight, according to Oleh Kiper, head of the Odesa region military management. The attack targeted energy and port infrastructure, also damaging several civilian vessels.
Specifically, a Russian drone struck the Turkish-flagged MT Orinda tanker while it was unloading liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), Turkish authorities reported. The 16-member crew was safely evacuated, and no injuries were reported. The strike took place a day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy finalized a deal in Greece to import US liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Black Sea ports.
Video footage of the fire on the tanker, moored on the Ukrainian side of the Danube, has been published by the Agerpress news agency.
