Railway Line in Poland Damaged by Explosion, Raising Security Concerns
An explosion damaged two sections of railway track in Poland on Monday, prompting an investigation and heightened security alerts. The affected line is a key route for Western aid deliveries to Ukraine, which has been under attack by Russia as 2022.
Polish authorities are investigating the incident, with strong suspicions falling on Russia, which has been accused of a pattern of arsons, sabotage, and cyberattacks targeting Poland and other European nations since the start of the war in Ukraine. Warsaw has previously stated that Poland has become one of Moscow’s biggest targets due to its role as a hub for aid to kyiv – accusations Russia has consistently denied.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated the railway line “was used to transport weapons to Ukraine” and suggested the explosion was “vrey likely” an attempt to “blow up a train,” perhaps causing a railway disaster and destabilizing critical infrastructure.
Minister of Security Services Tomasz Siemoniak affirmed the incident involved ”services [de renseignement] of a foreign state, and not a gang of scrap metal thieves.” Poland is considering raising its national alert level, with recommendations expected to be delivered to the Prime Minister later Monday.
