Kyiv Under Attack: Russian Strikes Ignite Fires Across Ukrainian capital
Kyiv, Ukraine – Russia launched widespread attacks on Kyiv Tuesday, hitting residential buildings adn critical infrastructure across “practically every district” of the capital, Ukrainian officials reported. The strikes sparked multiple fires and left residents scrambling amidst rubble-strewn streets, while also disrupting heating services and raising concerns about potential power and water outages.
The assault comes as Ukraine faces increased pressure from European Union officials to address corruption, even as international aid continues to flow to support the country’s defense against Russia’s ongoing invasion. Kyiv’s military governance confirmed the use of both drones and missiles in the barrage,with emergency crews dispatched to numerous neighborhoods.
“The russians are hitting residential buildings. There are a great many damaged multi-storey apartment buildings, in practically every district,” stated Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, via Telegram.
Damage reports detailed impacts across the city. In the Darnytskyi district, debris ignited a car in a residential yard and on educational grounds. The Dniprovskyi district saw damage to three apartment buildings, a private home, and a fire in an open area. five residential buildings and a nonresidential structure were impacted in the Podilskyi district.
Beyond the city limits, strikes in the Kyiv region damaged critical infrastructure and private homes, injuring at least one civilian. A 55-year-old man in Bila Tserkva was hospitalized with thermal burns,according to regional head mykola Kalashnyk. Fires also erupted in private houses in the capital’s suburbs.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported damage to the city’s heating system, resulting in service interruptions in one district, and warned of possible disruptions to power and water supplies.
The attacks occurred amid scrutiny of Ukraine’s anti-corruption efforts following a recent major graft scandal involving top nuclear energy officials.Despite the concerns, EU officials have reaffirmed their commitment to continued financial assistance as Ukraine continues to defend itself against Russia.
