MLB Pitcher Luis Ortiz and Emmanuel Clase Face Bribery Charges

Luis Ortiz, a pitcher ‍for the Cleveland ⁢Guardians, entered a not-guilty‌ plea Wednesday in connection with allegations that‍ he and teammate Emmanuel Clase⁤ accepted bribes to ‍influence game outcomes. ⁣Ortiz, 26, appeared in Brooklyn federal court after being arrested Sunday at Boston⁢ Logan ​International Airport. He was ⁣released‍ on $500,000 bail and will be monitored via GPS ⁢pending a Nov. 19 court date. As conditions of his release, Ortiz surrendered his passport ⁣and is restricted to travel ⁣within New York, Massachusetts, and Ohio. He is also prohibited from gambling, possessing weapons or illegal drugs, and contacting those involved in the‌ case. Ortiz reportedly answered questions from⁤ the ⁤judge briefly and declined to comment to the​ media. Clase, a ⁤former Guardians reliever, is scheduled to appear in the same court Thursday. The charges allege the players accepted payments to impact ​pitches in favor of sports bettors.
