Cold Shelters Open Across Tampa Bay Area as Temperatures Drop
TAMPA, FL – November 25, 2025 – As a cold front descends upon teh Tampa Bay region, bringing with it considerably lower temperatures, several shelters have opened their doors to provide warmth and safety for individuals experiencing homelessness. these emergency cold weather shelters offer a critical lifeline for vulnerable populations, providing refuge from possibly life-threatening conditions.
The activation of these shelters comes as the national Weather Service forecasts overnight lows dipping into the upper 40s and low 50s across Hillsborough, Pinellas, and Manatee counties. The availability of these resources is particularly vital as the region prepares for a prolonged period of cooler weather, impacting those without access to stable housing. Shelters are operating with specific intake procedures and capacity limits, and transportation assistance is available in some areas.
Hillsborough County Locations:
Two locations in Hillsborough County are currently serving as cold weather shelters. The First Baptist Church of Plant City, located at 2104 Mud lake Rd., Plant City, FL 33566, is open to those seeking refuge. Additionally, The Portico, at 1001 N.Florida Ave.,Tampa,FL 33602,is also providing shelter services.
Manatee county Resources:
In manatee County, the Salvation Army at 1204 14th Street West, Bradenton, is operating as an emergency shelter. Intake begins nightly at 6:00 PM and closes at 8:00 PM, or when the shelter reaches full capacity. Residents of Manatee County are eligible for seven free nights of shelter, while those from other counties with a valid state-issued ID can receive three nights. After the free nights are exhausted, a $15 per night fee will be applied.
Manatee County Area Transit (MCAT) is offering transportation to the Salvation Army shelter, beginning at 5:00 PM, from the following pickup points: Turning Points (701 17th Ave W, Bradenton), MCAT Bus Depot (DeSoto Station – 820 301 Blvd W, Bradenton), Under One Roof (407 57th Ave E, bradenton), and Palmetto Police Department (1115 10th St W, Palmetto).
Shelter Guidelines:
The Salvation Army shelter requires individuals seeking assistance to be at least 18 years of age or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Emergency shelter clients must depart by 6:00 AM for women and families, and 7:00 AM for men. These shelters provide a temporary solution to a growing problem, and local organizations continue to advocate for long-term housing solutions for the area’s homeless population.
