Mike Smith, star of the Canadian mockumentary Trailer Park Boys, has stepped away from his role within the production company following a sexual assault charge. Smith, who plays the character Bubbles, was charged on October 2nd in connection with an alleged incident dating back to December 30, 2017, in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
The move comes after the completion of Season 13, which wrapped filming in August following a nearly eight-year gap since Season 12. Trailer Park Boys Inc. confirmed Smith has stepped down as managing director, with Gary Howsam assuming those responsibilities. This advancement impacts the future of a comedy series that has garnered a dedicated fanbase since its debut in 2001 and its revival on Netflix in 2014.
“We are aware of the allegation concerning Mike smith dating back to 2017 and take such matters seriously,” Trailer Park Boys Inc. stated to multiple outlets. “We recognise how difficult an allegation of this nature is for all involved.” The company added that, due to the ongoing legal process, they will not be commenting further on the case.
Smith, alongside Rob Wells as Ricky and John Paul Tremblay as Julian, has been a central figure in Trailer Park Boys as its inception, created by Mike Clattenburg. The show initially ran for seven seasons before being revived by Netflix. CBC News first reported the charge against Smith.
