Empowering teh Next Generation: Women Law Students Connect with Leaders at ”Off the Record”
Oklahoma City, OK – The theme of empowerment resonated strongly at this year’s “Off the Record” event, hosted by the women of McAfee & Taft on October 23, 2025. Held in the striking atrium of Leadership Square in downtown Oklahoma City, the annual gathering brought together women law students from Oklahoma City University (OCU) School of Law and the University of Oklahoma (OU) College of Law with a diverse group of accomplished women in the legal field and beyond.
“Off the Record” is designed as a crucial bridge between academic study and the realities of a legal career. The cocktail reception-style event fosters an informal habitat where students can network with experienced lawyers and judges, engaging in candid conversations about the challenges and triumphs not often covered in traditional coursework. This year’s event continued that tradition, offering a space for open dialog and mentorship.
The event’s success stemmed from the collaborative spirit of McAfee & Taft, OCU Law, and OU Law. Beyond the firm’s attorneys, the evening welcomed distinguished guests representing the state bench, non-profit organizations, government agencies, and various industries. Notably, several attendees shared how they’ve successfully transitioned their legal expertise into leadership roles in business and entrepreneurship, providing students with a broader perspective on career paths.
Maria Gonzalez (JD ’06) and emma Wilson (JD ’17), both University of Oklahoma College of Law alumnae and shareholders at McAfee & Taft, skillfully emceed the event, guiding the evening’s conversations and introductions.
A recap video highlights key moments and features insights from several participants. Featured in the video, in order of appearance, are Maria Gonzalez (McAfee & Taft), Jennifer Needham (OU Law), Alana Haynes House (OCU law), Kelsey Ellis (McAfee & Taft), Kaci Godfrey (OU Law Student), Jen Mook (U.S.District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma), and Kendra Norman (Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores).
This event underscores the importance of mentorship and networking in shaping the future of the legal profession, particularly for women. By providing a platform for authentic connection and open discussion, “Off the Record” is helping to empower the next generation of legal leaders in Oklahoma.
