Pia Sundhage Fired: Swiss Football Association Ends Contract

Pia⁤ Sundhage to Step Down as Swiss ⁤National⁢ Team Manager: “Surprised” ‍by Decision


Bern,​ Switzerland⁤ – Pia Sundhage, 65, has announced she ​will⁣ not seek a contract extension with the Swiss Football Association (SFV) after being informed ⁣on Monday⁤ that her current agreement, expiring in December, would not be renewed. Sundhage stated she also did not intend to continue ⁣with the national team, according to‌ the SFV.

“I would have liked to continue‍ this journey.I am surprised by the decision of the Swiss Football Association, but​ I ⁢respect it.⁤ I wish the team and Swiss​ football all‍ the best – and that the passion we ‌felt this summer continues,”

The SFV released⁢ a statement expressing gratitude‌ for Sundhage’s contributions. SFV chairman Peter⁢ Knäbel commented,”Pia Sundhage took ‌over the ⁢team in 2024 during a⁤ difficult period and ‌led them through an unforgettable EC in ‍our country.Together with the players and ‍the ​staff, she laid the foundation for⁣ a promising future in swiss women’s football. We thank Pia and her coaching staff and wish them all the best in the future.”

sundhage assumed leadership of the Swiss national team in ⁤2024, successfully guiding them to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Women’s European ⁤Championship hosted in Switzerland this summer. Her distinguished⁢ coaching career includes previous roles as national ⁢team captain for Sweden, Brazil, and the United States.

This marks the end of a significant chapter for Swiss women’s football, following a period ‍of growth and increased visibility under Sundhage’s guidance.
