Korean Game Developers Expand PC & Console Ambitions Beyond ‘P’s Lie‘ Success
BUSAN, SOUTH KOREA – Following breakthrough successes in the PC and console gaming markets, Korean game companies are aggressively expanding their growth of large-scale “triple A” titles, signaling a meaningful shift in the nation’s gaming industry. This momentum builds on the critical and commercial triumphs of P’s Lie (2023), Stella Blade (2024), and First Berserker: Kazan (2024), demonstrating a growing confidence and capability in competing with global giants.
The surge in ambition comes as developers move beyond mobile-first strategies, recognizing the potential for broader audiences and increased revenue streams in the PC and console space.while acknowledging upcoming competition from highly anticipated releases like GTA6, industry analysts predict a sustained multi-platform approach from Korean studios, fueled by recent successes and a desire to establish a stronger international presence. This expansion isn’t a replacement for existing projects, however. Wemade Max clarified that it’s upcoming open-world action RPG, Project: Tal, scheduled for a 2027 release and based on traditional Korean mythology, is a distinct project from any previously rumored “Young Forty Game.”
Wemade Max recently unveiled a trailer for Project: Tal, generating significant buzz. simultaneously, Nexon’s Swedish studio, Embark Studio, achieved a strong launch with Ark Raiders on the 30th of last month, peaking at over 260,000 concurrent players on Steam. Looking ahead, Pearl Abyss has confirmed a March 20th (Korean time) release date for Red Desert. NCSoft plans to launch the open-world tactical shooting game Cinder City in the second half of 2025, with a demonstration booth planned for G-Star 2025 in Busan. Netmarble will preview its PC, console, and mobile RPG Seven Deadly Sins: Origin at this year’s G-Star, ahead of its January 28th, 2025 release.
“After the success of P’s Lie,Stella Blade, and Kazan, domestic game companies also seem to have gained some confidence in developing PC and console games,” stated an industry official. “Even though foreign masterpieces such as GTA6 next year are a variable, domestic game companies’ multi-platform response strategy will continue.”
