ITTF Initiatives Elevate African Table Tennis Ahead of Dakar 2026 Youth Olympics
DAKAR, Senegal – A surge in technical expertise and organizational capacity is sweeping across African table tennis as the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) ramps up advancement programs in anticipation of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games – the first Olympic event ever hosted on the continent. these initiatives are laying the groundwork for a prosperous Games and a lasting legacy for the sport throughout Africa.
The upcoming Youth Olympics represent a pivotal moment for table tennis in Africa, offering an unprecedented platform to showcase talent and inspire a new generation of athletes. To ensure African nations are fully prepared, the ITTF has focused on bolstering both on-table and off-table capabilities. This includes intensive training for competition officials and umpires, alongside digital resources designed to strengthen the organizational foundations of national associations.
Recent ITTF programs have already yielded important results. In 2024, 18 individuals from nine member associations achieved “Regional Competition Manager in Progress” status following participation in competition management workshops and online certification programs. Simultaneously, the success rate for the International Umpire examination climbed to 58%.
Beyond officiating, African associations have actively engaged with the ITTF’s digital learning platforms, collectively accessing 170 hours of online educational services aimed at enhancing their overall organizational strength.These programs are designed to build lasting infrastructure and expertise,ensuring continued growth long after the Games conclude.
