Abandoned Omaha Motel Falls into Disrepair Following Trafficking Raid
An Omaha motel, previously targeted in a federal raid connected to a sex trafficking operation, is now deteriorating and posing concerns for nearby businesses and residents. The property, located near 13th and I-80, was part of a larger operation involving four metro motels, and has remained closed since the raid.
Omaha City Councilmember Ron Hug reports receiving complaints from neighbors and business owners regarding increased activity and new damage at the site. The motel exhibits notable disrepair, with broken windows, discarded furniture both inside and outside, and an unsecured side entrance. A hazardous indoor pool, stagnant and visibly unsanitary, remains full of water.
“The building needs to be secure, the pool needs to be drained,” Hug stated.
The condition of the motel is impacting surrounding businesses. John Cap, of Chops Bowling Center, noted the negative impression the dilapidated property creates for visitors arriving from the interstate, notably those heading to attractions like the Omaha Zoo.
Adding to the problem, the abandoned motel has become a target for trespassers stripping the building for scrap metal. Neighboring landlord Amy Hynek described seeing individuals removing copper wiring and air conditioning units, and reported damage to the property’s fencing. The Hyneks, who operate a short-term rental nearby, say the motel’s condition is negatively impacting their business, with guests citing concerns about the neighborhood. Thay have documented evidence, including video and photos, showing continued activity at the site, including both human and animal presence.
While Omaha police are responding to trespassing calls, questions remain regarding responsibility for securing and cleaning up the property. The motel owner is facing federal charges, and his attorney is reportedly working with a realtor on a plan for securing the property and potential sale. Though, the process might potentially be delayed due to federal oversight related to the forfeiture of the four motels involved in the original indictment.
The city reports having tired its legal options, describing the situation as being in “legal limbo.” Attempts to reach the US Attorney and the Omaha FBI field office for comment were unsuccessful, potentially due to the ongoing government shutdown.
Neighbors are hoping for a swift resolution, advocating for the property to be either boarded up or demolished.
