Inspiring a Generation: Team Palestine‘s robotics Journey
Team Palestine is preparing to compete in Panama City with a robot designed to simulate ecological balance, collecting and launching “biodiversity units” into a constructed ecosystem. This year’s five-member team, accompanied by mentors, represents a significant milestone for a program deeply rooted in inspiring Palestinian youth to pursue STEM fields.
The impact of the program extends far beyond the competition itself. Mentors express immense pride in seeing students translate their passion for robotics into career aspirations. Recent graduates like Ismail, now studying computer engineering at Queen’s University, and Shanti, a freshman at Al-Najah National University studying business intelligence, serve as role models for current team members. They return during summer breaks to volunteer, sharing their knowledge and demonstrating the possibilities a STEM education unlocks.
“We have no words to express our feelings when a student graduates and says, ‘I wont to be like Khalil and study computer science, or robotics,'” shares a team mentor, Saleh. ”It’s incredibly rewarding to see that passion turn into a career.”
For current team member Dalia Nasr, 16, the prospect to learn from these alumni is invaluable. “There aren’t a lot of robotics courses in Palestine,” she explains. “It’s not common to have these kinds of opportunities, so this is a really big one.” Nasr will serve as the team’s “human player” in Panama City, utilizing her (admittedly limited) basketball skills to assist the robot in launching the biodiversity units.
Nasr views her participation as a profound honor and a chance to inspire others. “Being able to take part in a competition where I can inspire other Palestinian youth interested in STEM is genuinely life-changing,” she states. “I know it’s a lot of pressure, but it’s also a really big honor.”
Ismail echoes this sentiment, noting the cyclical nature of inspiration within the program. “At some point, I was looking to those who participated in previous years. The same way I’m inspiring peopel now, others inspired me.”
Team Palestine’s journey highlights the power of robotics to ignite a passion for STEM and empower the next generation of Palestinian innovators.
