Critically Acclaimed Korean Film ‘In Our Prime‘ Finds Limited Theatrical Release Despite New york Times Praise
A Korean film garnering significant international attention, including a glowing review from The New york Times, is experiencing a surprisingly limited theatrical run, leaving many eager viewers unable to see it on the big screen. In Our Prime, directed by Yang Jeong-woo, focuses on the lives of elderly individuals and has resonated deeply with audiences and critics alike for its poignant portrayal of aging and rediscovering joy.
The film’s success stems from its ability to depict the loneliness experienced by the elderly while together celebrating the vitality and desire that persists in later life. Actor Park Geun-hyung highlighted the film’s power in representing these feelings, stating, “I really liked the scenes where elderly people in diffrent situations communicate, become closer, and feel affectionate, and there were many things that touched my heart.” The film emphasizes living in the present, showcasing characters who find renewed purpose through simple pleasures like sharing meals.
The production wasn’t without its challenges. One of the actors recalled initial friction with the teachers involved in the project, admitting, “We got angry and clashed while asking for comical elements and changing lines, but in hindsight, I realized that the teachers’ judgment was right. All I had to do was make a game where the three of us could play comfortably as they ordered, but I got caught up in my greed.”I felt sorry for bothering you.””
Director Yang’s intention wasn’t to issue a warning about societal attitudes towards aging, but rather to affirm the continued vibrancy of older individuals. “I wanted to tell the elderly people that their hearts are still beating through the main characters living in the present, and that they must live a life that makes their hearts beat until the last moment of their lives,” Yang explained. A particularly impactful line, “Have you ever felt your heart beat like this in your life?” delivered by actor Wooshik, was singled out by the director as the film’s most memorable.
