NBA Stars Chauncey Billups and Terry Rozier Implicated in Illegal Sports Betting Scheme
New York, NY – NBA players Chauncey Billups and Terry Rozier are among those facing federal charges following the unsealing of an indictment detailing an alleged illegal sports betting scheme, authorities announced today. The case centers around accusations that individuals with inside access to NBA teams leaked confidential player health information to gamblers in exchange for financial gain.
The investigation, which has been ongoing for months, reveals a network where non-public details about player injuries were allegedly used to influence betting outcomes. This scandal raises serious concerns about the integrity of professional basketball and the potential for compromised competition. The charges come as sports betting continues to expand rapidly across the United States, increasing scrutiny of potential corruption within the industry.
Court documents allege that Damon Jones, who served as an unofficial assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers during the 2022-2023 season, exploited his position to obtain confidential medical information. He is accused of sharing this information with co-conspirators who then used it for betting purposes.
In one instance, detailed in court filings, Jones allegedly texted an associate in February 2023 about an injured Lakers player, stating, “Get a big bet on Milwaukee tonight before the information is out! [Player 3] is out tonight.” The Lakers afterward lost the game.
The scheme wasn’t always successful. In January 2024, Jones and an associate allegedly sold information about an injured Lakers player – whose name is redacted in court documents – to a sports better for $2,500. The better then wagered $100,000 against the Lakers, but the player performed as expected and the Lakers won. The sports better requested a refund, which was reportedly denied by Jones and his associate.
Billups and Rozier’s specific roles in the alleged scheme are still emerging, but they are named as defendants in the indictment.Further details are expected to be released as the legal proceedings unfold. The NBA has stated it is cooperating fully with the investigation.
