A four-year-old boy is in critical condition after ‍a shooting at a ⁤southeast⁤ Houston⁤ apartment complex Monday afternoon. The incident occurred ⁣just before 1 p.m. at the SageHollow Apartments, located in the‌ 10700 block of Fuqua​ Street.

Houston police report the child ⁣sustained a gunshot ‌wound to the head after obtaining a firearm‍ and accidentally discharging ​it.Authorities are investigating how the child accessed the weapon.‍ The boy was transported to ⁤a local hospital and was scheduled for surgery Monday night.

Investigators detained the ‍child’s mother and her fiancé for questioning, but‌ no ​arrests have been made as of Monday evening. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office ⁢will review the findings‍ and ⁣determine if any charges will ‍be filed.

“Nobody should ⁣have a gun accessible to any child of any age. I hope that they get to the bottom‌ of ⁢it. I hope they know exactly what happened,” said Cathy ‌Lazenberry, a witness who observed first responders arriving at the scene.
