Germany is experiencing a surge in influenza cases, with numbers considerably higher than those reported during the same period last year, according to data released by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). As of mid-October 2025, 395,095 influenza cases have been recorded nationwide, a substantial increase compared to the 204,412 cases reported by mid-October 2024. This rise in flu cases signals a possibly challenging respiratory illness season ahead, impacting public health adn healthcare systems across the country.
The increased incidence of influenza is particularly notable in Bavaria, which has registered the highest number of cases at 72,108. This figure surpasses the number of cases reported in North Rhine-Westphalia, a state with a considerably larger population, which recorded 63,965 cases. Saxony, a smaller federal state with approximately four million residents, is also experiencing a disproportionately high number of infections, reporting 43,262 cases as of mid-October. The RKI continues to monitor the situation and provide updates as the influenza season progresses.
