AMD Stock Surges: AI Deal with OpenAI Drives 38% Rise

AMD and OpenAI Forge Strategic ‍Partnership, Boosting AMD ‌Stock

AMD stock has surged by 38%, marking it’s largest increase in⁢ nine years, fueled by a ⁤meaningful multi-billion dollar agreement with leading artificial ⁢intelligence firm,​ OpenAI. This deal encompasses ample processor deliveries and ⁤provides OpenAI with a stake in AMD’s future success.

A Landmark Contract & Equity Incentive

The Bloomberg-reported collaboration sent ripples through financial markets. AMD shares peaked​ at $226.71 during monday’s ‌trading, demonstrating strong momentum.⁣ in contrast, competitor Nvidia ⁤experienced a slight 2.3% decline.The agreement commits ​AMD to delivering 6⁢ gigawatts (GW) of graphics processing power ‌to‌ OpenAI ‌over several years. ⁢ Crucially, ⁣AMD has also​ granted OpenAI a special share ⁤purchase right – a ⁤variation – for approximately⁢ 160 million shares ​at⁢ a nominal price of $0.01 per⁣ share. AMD CEO Lisa Su highlighted the strategic importance of the partnership, stating, “OpenAI has a⁢ tremendous⁢ job in front of ⁤our ⁣technology. We wanted to make ​sure that OpenAI is motivated⁤ by ‌AMD’s success.” This collaboration occurs amidst⁤ rapid ‌growth and intensifying competition within the AI sector. Nvidia, such as, announced plans ‌in‍ September to invest up to $100 billion in ‍AI infrastructure ⁤and data centers requiring at​ least 10 GW of power – equivalent to the maximum electricity consumption of ‍New York City. However, ⁣questions remain regarding OpenAI’s financing strategy for the substantial costs⁣ associated with‍ the chips and data centers needed⁢ for a leading-edge AI system.

Two months prior, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman ⁣expressed a desire to invest⁢ “trillions” in AI ‍infrastructure, ‍hinting at ⁤the growth of a novel financial instrument without providing‍ details.
