U.S. Approves $1.75 Billion HIMARS sale to Canada
WASHINGTON D.C. – The United States Department of defense has authorized the sale of High Mobility artillery rocket Systems (HIMARS) and related equipment to Canada for an estimated $1.75 billion, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced today. The deal will significantly bolster Canada’s long-range precision strike capabilities.
The proposed sale includes the M142 HIMARS launch systems, alongside ammunition, support vehicles, and associated training and logistical support. This acquisition is intended to enhance Canada’s ability to address evolving security threats, contributing to both hemispheric defense and NATO’s deterrence efforts in Europe. According to the DSCA, Canada anticipates no difficulty integrating the systems into its Armed Forces.
The DSCA stated that the HIMARS sale “will improve Canada’s ability to deal with current and future threats… This capacity will provide protection to Canada by strengthening its contribution to the hemispheric collective defense and the defense and deterrence in Europe, according to NATO defense plans.” The systems are expected to provide a crucial capability for long-range precision attacks.
The declaration comes as several nations are increasing defense spending and modernizing their military arsenals in response to geopolitical instability. The sale requires Congressional approval, but is expected to proceed without issue.
