Cawthorn Seeks Florida Comeback, Challenging Donalds in GOP Primary
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) – Former North Carolina Congressman Madison Cawthorn is seeking a return to Washington, announcing a run for Florida’s 19th Congressional District currently held by Rep.Byron donalds, who is pursuing a gubernatorial bid. Cawthorn, 30, officially launched his campaign Wednesday with an online video.
The district, located in southwest Florida, is a Republican stronghold. Cawthorn relocated to the area shortly after losing his 2022 GOP primary in North Carolina to Chuck Edwards, a defeat hampered by ethical concerns.
Cawthorn’s campaign platform centers on aligning with former President donald Trump‘s “America First” agenda, emphasizing stricter immigration policies, gun rights, and opposition to “woke ideology.” His campaign website states he aims to “hold bureaucrats accountable and put Floridians first.”
Cawthorn rose to national attention after winning his house seat in 2020 at age 25. He quickly became a vocal supporter of Trump, speaking at the ”Stop the Steal” rally before the January 6th capitol insurrection. While receiving Trump’s endorsement, Cawthorn’s first term was marked by controversy, including speeding and gun violations, and accusations that alienated fellow Republicans.
despite past challenges, Cawthorn expressed his readiness to represent the district from his home in Cape Coral. “I’m running for Congress to stand with President Trump, defend our conservative values, and fight to stop the radical left every single time,” he stated in his campaign launch video.
He will face a competitive primary field including former U.S. Rep. Chris Collins of New York, former Illinois state Sen. Jim Oberweis, Marine aviator Mike Pedersen, and Sun Broadcasting President Jim Schwartzel. The only Democrat currently in the race is Howard Sapp, a community organizer with previous unsuccessful bids for state office.
