Amazon Launches Vega OS with New Fire TV Stick 4K Select, Tightens app Access
SEATTLE, WA – September 26, 2023 – amazon today unveiled Vega OS, a new operating system for its Fire TV devices, alongside the Fire TV Stick 4K Select streaming stick adn updated Omni QLED and 4-Series televisions. While promising a faster, more responsive streaming experience, the new OS restricts app downloads to the Amazon Appstore, a move likely to frustrate users who currently sideload applications.
The shift to Vega OS, built on linux, aims to improve interface speed and app performance while maintaining 4K HDR video capabilities, especially on the new $40 Fire TV Stick 4K Select - which Amazon claims is the fastest streamer in its price range. However, the exclusive reliance on the Amazon Appstore represents a important change for Fire TV users accustomed to greater adaptability in app selection. This decision prioritizes security, according to Amazon, but limits user customization.
amazon states Vega OS will be supported by updated versions of major streaming apps. The Fire TV Stick 4K Select is scheduled to ship in October, alongside the refreshed Omni QLED Series TVs (50- to 75-inch models starting at $479.99) and 4-Series sets (43- to 55-inch models starting at $159.99).The new OS and hardware represent Amazon’s continued push into the competitive streaming media player market, directly challenging rivals like Roku.
The company describes Vega OS as both “responsive” and “highly efficient,” and anticipates it will boost the speed of the 4K Select’s interface and apps. For users who previously sideloaded apps-a “fairly convoluted process” according to Android Central-the change will eliminate that option.
