Ahaus, Germany – A tragic incident unfolded in Ahaus, a German city bordering the Netherlands, today when a regional train collided with an ambulance at a railway crossing. an 88-year-old patient inside the ambulance died at the scene, while the three-person crew escaped with minor injuries.
The ambulance was en route to a hospital, transporting the elderly woman who had experienced a medical emergency during the journey. According to initial reports, the 18-year-old ambulance driver pulled over on Schumacher Ring to provide immediate medical attention to the patient. Tragically, he did not realise they were positioned directly on the railway crossing as the barriers began to descend, signaling the approach of a train.
The driver, along with two paramedics – aged 19 and 24 – were able to evacuate the vehicle moments before the impact. Despite their efforts, they were unable to remove the patient in time. The regional train struck the ambulance with fatal force.
Authorities initially investigated whether the womanS death was a result of the collision or a continuation of her pre-existing medical condition. Though, police have now confirmed that the impact of the train was the direct cause of death.
Three members of the ambulance crew and two passengers on the train sustained minor injuries in the accident.The railway line connecting Ahaus and Coesfeld remains closed as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision and work to clear the wreckage.
