A kangaroo escaped from a private enclosure in Berlin on September 29, 2025, prompting a police search adn raising questions about the security of the property. The animal, described as slightly over knee-high, was initially spotted by a resident who thoght they had misidentified it.
The escaped kangaroo belongs to Jakob Augstein, heir to the “Spiegel” publishing fortune, and resides on his property. Authorities believe the enclosure was deliberately opened by an unauthorized individual, facilitating the animal’s escape. Residents report previous instances of wallabies-closely related marsupials-escaping from the same location and roaming nearby neighborhoods.
Police are investigating the incident and the circumstances surrounding the opened enclosure. Five other kangaroos remain within the spacious outdoor facility, complete with a stable, awaiting the return of their companion. BILD located the enclosure where the escape originated.
Augstein has not yet responded to multiple inquiries from BILD regarding the incident.
