Google’s New Developer Registration‍ Policy Threatens‌ Alternative App Stores Like F-Droid

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA – September 29,‌ 2025 – Google’s forthcoming developer registration requirements could effectively ⁢eliminate alternative android app stores and sideloading, according to a warning⁤ issued today by⁣ F-Droid, ⁤a‌ popular‍ repository for free and open-source software.‌ Teh new policy, announced ⁢by Google, mandates that ⁢all Android app developers register with verified identities using government IDs and personal ⁤details, and declare all ‌app identifiers⁣ and‌ signing keys directly to Google.

F-Droid explained in⁢ a⁢ blog post that this ‌requirement would prevent platforms ⁣like ⁤F-Droid from distributing apps, as they lack control ⁢over the necessary developer keys and IDs. “The developer registration decree will end⁤ the F-Droid project and other free/open-source app ⁢distribution sources⁤ as⁣ we no them today,” F-Droid warned.

Google states the policy aims to improve security and combat malware. However, F-Droid disputes this claim, pointing to past instances of malicious apps appearing on the ‍Google Play‌ Store and the existence of Android’s built-in Play Protect security features. F-Droid ⁤argues its open-source approach offers greater transparency and trustworthiness.

The platform expresses concern that the new rules will restrict how Android users obtain apps,⁣ moving the ecosystem ⁢towards a⁣ more‌ closed model. “If you own a computer, you should have the right to run ⁤whatever programs you want on it,” F-Droid wrote.

F-Droid is now⁢ calling on‌ regulators in Europe, the US, and⁢ other ⁤regions to investigate Google’s plans,⁤ labeling them⁢ monopolistic and detrimental to competition ⁤and user freedom.Google plans to begin implementing the⁤ new developer verification requirements in phases starting September 2026. The company maintains developers⁢ will still be able to distribute apps directly ‍to users⁣ via sideloading or through any app store.
