NATO Intercepts Five Russian Military Aircraft Near Latvian ⁢Coast

Šiauliai, lithuania – NATO fighter jets scrambled ​on Tuesday to intercept⁢ five Russian military aircraft flying near⁣ Latvian‌ airspace, ⁣according to a statement from NATO’s Air Force Command. ‍The ⁢incident​ underscores heightened tensions in the region adn NATO’s commitment to safeguarding ​its eastern flank.

The Russian aircraft – one Su-30, one ⁤su-35, and three MiG-31s⁣ – where detected flying west of the ‌Latvian Baltic Sea coast and approaching NATO airspace without adhering to international ‍flight security regulations. Two​ Hungarian fighter jets, operating from Šiauliai airfield in Lithuania,⁤ were dispatched to escort the Russian planes.

NATO emphasized Hungary‘s swift response as ​a presentation of the alliance’s dedication to ⁢the protection⁤ and security of the Baltic states and eastern Europe. After the escort, the Hungarian jets safely returned to base.

Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds stated in an interview with Latvian radio that the incident prompted⁣ NATO to⁣ reinforce its vigilance and preparedness.”Russian fighter jets mean‌ that NATO has activated his actions in this situation and will⁢ work even​ more ⁢steadfast,” Spruds said. He further noted‌ that Russian military aircraft approaching or ⁢violating NATO airspace ‌has become a ‌recurring pattern.

the incident follows ⁢a⁢ recent increase in Russian provocations near NATO⁣ territory, including drone flights around NATO capitals, according to reporting from Delfi.lt, which first reported​ the ​incident.
