CFR Cluj Mourns Young Player Ciprian Scrobota After Tragic Fall in the U.S.
Ciprian Scrobota, a 20-year-old former player from CFR Cluj’s Academy, died in the United States following a fall from a significant height, Romanian sports outlet golazo.ro reported. Details surrounding the incident indicate Scrobota struck his head on stones during the fall and subsequently drowned in a river. The circumstances suggest the fall was the result of inattention.
The tragedy has sparked both grief and outrage among supporters of the Romanian football club, notably regarding the costs associated with repatriating Scrobota’s body. While CFR Cluj has initiated a fundraising campaign to cover the estimated $8,000 to $13,000 expense, fans have criticized club owner ioan Varga, pointing to his publicly stated wealth – including claims of owning 2,300 kg of gold – as reason for the club to directly fund the repatriation.
Professor Lazăr Ilie, who knew Scrobota well thru both school and football, described the young player as “my adopted boy,” expressing deep sorrow over the loss. “But the will of the Lord was different, called at 20, to him,” Ilie stated.
The club’s appeal for donations has drawn sharp reactions online, with fans questioning the allocation of funds given recent player acquisitions. Comments cited by prosport.ro include, “Well, you give hundreds of thousands of euros on all the football players, but now you ask for donations” and accusations that Varga’s wealth should preclude the need for public fundraising for a former academy player.
