COVID-19 Cases Rise with New JN.1 Variant; Vaccination Campaign Set for October 14th
A resurgence of COVID-19, driven by the newly identified JN.1 variant, is prompting health officials to prepare a vaccination campaign launching October 14th. Reported cases climbed significantly between September 8th and 14th,with approximately 25,000 new infections recorded. While the current variant doesn’t appear to cause more severe illness than previous strains, experts emphasize the importance of protecting vulnerable populations.
The increase in cases marks a shift as health authorities have long aimed to manage COVID-19 as a seasonal respiratory virus, similar to influenza. The upcoming vaccination drive will include a new vaccine from Pfizer, offering updated protection against the evolving virus. This renewed focus on vaccination comes as the JN.1 variant gains traction, raising concerns for those at higher risk of complications.
Epidemiologist Philippe Amouyel underscored the need for swift action, telling Europe1, “There, we are on a rather upward trend, but really at the very beginning […] When the period arrives, I think that target people will have to be quickly vaccinated.”
Health officials recommend that elderly individuals, those with underlying health conditions, and pregnant women prioritize vaccination to mitigate potential risks associated with the JN.1 variant. The campaign aims to provide a crucial layer of defense against the virus as it circulates more widely during the fall and winter months.
