Russia Launches⁢ Large-Scale Attack on Ukraine, Killing ‍Three

KYIV, Ukraine ⁢- Russia launched a massive aerial assault on Ukraine overnight, deploying 619 drones and missiles, resulting in at⁤ least three deaths in the ⁣Dnipro region, Ukrainian officials reported saturday. The attack, comprised‍ of 579 drones, eight ballistic missiles, and 32 ⁣cruise missiles, targeted multiple‍ regions across⁢ the country.

Ukraine’s Air Force stated it intercepted and neutralized 552 drones,⁤ two ballistic⁣ missiles, and 29 ⁢cruise missiles. However, strikes still caused meaningful damage, including fires at residential buildings ⁤and infrastructure. Rescue workers are currently working‌ to extinguish fires in Dnipro, where a residential house was directly hit.

The attack comes as Ukraine⁤ continues its own⁢ campaign targeting Russia’s oil infrastructure. Ukrainian forces struck two oil refineries in‌ the ⁢saratov and ‌Samara regions, ⁢with the Saratovsky refinery‍ processing approximately 2.54% of russia’s total oil refining volume – over 7 million tons⁢ annually. Ukraine’s General staff also reported‌ damage to a key ‌transport ‌infrastructure facility‌ in Samara, ⁤stating all affected ⁢facilities are involved in supplying the Russian Armed Forces.

This offensive is‌ part of a broader Ukrainian strategy to disrupt Russia’s ‌financial ⁢resources, with‍ President Zelenskyy⁢ asserting that oil‌ and gas revenues are a critical funding source for ‍the ongoing war.

On Friday, the ‌European Commission proposed ⁢a new⁢ round ⁤of ‌sanctions against Russia, targeting liquified natural⁢ gas (LNG), banks, cryptocurrency‍ platforms,⁤ and vessels ⁢within Moscow’s “shadow fleet.” Zelenskyy praised the ⁤sanctions, stating they “target⁢ the key engines⁣ of the war economy: energy revenues, finance, high-tech inputs, and the military-industrial base,” and would “intensify pressure on Russia’s war machine and have a tangible impact.”
