Russia Launches Large-Scale Attack on Ukraine, Killing Three
KYIV, Ukraine - Russia launched a massive aerial assault on Ukraine overnight, deploying 619 drones and missiles, resulting in at least three deaths in the Dnipro region, Ukrainian officials reported saturday. The attack, comprised of 579 drones, eight ballistic missiles, and 32 cruise missiles, targeted multiple regions across the country.
Ukraine’s Air Force stated it intercepted and neutralized 552 drones, two ballistic missiles, and 29 cruise missiles. However, strikes still caused meaningful damage, including fires at residential buildings and infrastructure. Rescue workers are currently working to extinguish fires in Dnipro, where a residential house was directly hit.
The attack comes as Ukraine continues its own campaign targeting Russia’s oil infrastructure. Ukrainian forces struck two oil refineries in the saratov and Samara regions, with the Saratovsky refinery processing approximately 2.54% of russia’s total oil refining volume – over 7 million tons annually. Ukraine’s General staff also reported damage to a key transport infrastructure facility in Samara, stating all affected facilities are involved in supplying the Russian Armed Forces.
This offensive is part of a broader Ukrainian strategy to disrupt Russia’s financial resources, with President Zelenskyy asserting that oil and gas revenues are a critical funding source for the ongoing war.
On Friday, the European Commission proposed a new round of sanctions against Russia, targeting liquified natural gas (LNG), banks, cryptocurrency platforms, and vessels within Moscow’s “shadow fleet.” Zelenskyy praised the sanctions, stating they “target the key engines of the war economy: energy revenues, finance, high-tech inputs, and the military-industrial base,” and would “intensify pressure on Russia’s war machine and have a tangible impact.”
