Vietnamese-Thai Horror Film “Ghost Bride” Faces Box Office Disappointment
hanoi, Vietnam – The Vietnamese-Thai co-production Ghost bride is struggling to find an audience, facing importent financial losses after two weeks in theaters, according to data from Vietnam Box Office. The film has earned a modest 11.5 billion VND (approximately $476,000 USD) and is experiencing low attendance rates.
On September 18th, Ghost Bride screened 180 times and sold only 413 tickets, generating 33 million VND (approximately $1,365 USD) in profit. This translates to an average of just over two tickets sold per screening – a stark indicator of the film’s underperformance. industry observers predict the film will likely conclude its theatrical run within days.
The release of Ghost Bride was initially delayed from August 29th to September in an attempt to avoid competition wiht the popular films Red Rain and Be Rich in Ghosts 2.However, this strategic shift failed to boost commercial success.
The horror film centers on Yen, a Vietnamese woman who enters a seemingly idyllic marriage overseas, only to find herself entangled in the strange rituals and dark secrets of her wealthy husband’s family. The cast includes Rima Thanh Vy, JJ Krissanapoom, Jun Wealth, Kongsuong, Carlypit Cha Pong Pan Pannet, and Narupone Kamol Chai. The production team had hoped for international appeal, planning screenings in Australia, the United States, and Canada.
While praised for its atmospheric visuals and investment in set design, costumes, and tone, critics note the film suffers from a weak script, impacting the overall viewing experience.
Lead actress Lima Tanbi expressed her disappointment, stating, “Less profits means that there are few audiences coming to see. That means you missed a chance to see myself different. I don’t always have a chance to appear in foreign films.I’m learning English and Thai for acting and I’m really working hard. I know that the audience is considering a variety of choices if people don’t come to see them.”
