Google launches Windows App with AI-Powered Search, Initially Limited to US Users
MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA – September 16, 2025 – Google has quietly released a new application for Windows, offering a streamlined search experience directly on the desktop and integrating AI capabilities. The app, currently available thru Google Search Labs, functions similarly to Spotlight on macOS,allowing users to quickly find information both online and within their local files.
The application requires Windows 10 or newer and installation mirrors that of Chrome. Users must log in with a Google Account to access its features, which include customizable keyboard shortcuts, AI mode toggling, and light/dark mode options. While the core functionality centers around search, the integration of AI aims to provide more complete and contextually relevant results.
Though, the rollout is currently restricted to users in the United States. Google is utilizing its Search Labs program – a platform for testing new features before wider release - for this initial launch. The app also currently only supports the English language.
The new application’s capabilities include the potential to search local files and Google Drive, a feature reminiscent of the swift access offered by the ChatGPT desktop app, where users can invoke the chatbot with a shortcut (Alt + Sappečník). Google has not yet announced a timeline for expanding availability beyond the US. Given its experimental nature within Search Labs, a global release could take several months.
