Royal Enfield‘s New Bear 650 Aims to revive ‘Desert Sled’ Appeal
Auckland, New Zealand - Royal Enfield has launched the Bear 650, a new motorcycle designed to capture the spirit of classic ”desert sleds,” offering a blend of retro styling and off-road capability. The bike shares its 650cc engine with the Interceptor roadster and Continental GT café racer, but features a tuned two-into-one exhaust for increased low-end torque and top-end power.
Key features of the Bear 650 include rear ABS that can be defeated with the push of a button, increased ground clearance (184mm) compared to the Interceptor, and an additional 30mm of suspension travel. It’s equipped with 19-inch front and 17-inch rear spoked wheels fitted with MRF tires optimized for both on- and off-road use. A double-cradle steel frame, longer wheelbase, and slacker rake contribute to stability, while 43mm USD forks handle impacts.
Reviewers note the bike’s lower center of gravity allows for easier powersliding compared to taller adventure bikes. The Bear 650 also boasts a retro-styled instrument cluster housing a TFT screen, and all-LED lighting.
The 47bhp engine delivers “smooth, consistent riding force,” paired with a six-speed gearbox. Though, some drawbacks include firm rear shocks and a perhaps flimsy toggle for adjusting the TFT screen. The bike is well-suited for gravel roads and smooth fire breaks, and also performs well on paved surfaces due to its accurate steering and cozy riding position.
